Using descriptive language in writing is one of the things we try to emphasis and enhance in 5th grade. I start the unit out with the piece below and have the students discuss what they visualize when I am reading it. I eventually put the whole piece up on the smartboard and have them draw what they are reading. It is interesting to them that all of their pieces look similiar because the writing is so descriptive. They then bring in something of importance to them and write a descriptive piece on it. This year I will have someone record their piece to share with the class
